ABSTRACT
The modern idea of a future leisure society is a creation of advanced industrial societies, but it is possible to find references to some of the concepts involved far back into human history and pre-history. In this chapter these sources are traced in paradisiacal accounts, via classical philosophy and folk fantasy and in utopian writings from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. In addition, examples of elite ‘leisure societies within society’ are examined.
