ABSTRACT
The da wning ofthe 20th cen tury represented to Americans of African descent, not a new day, but a rehashing of disenchantment with a system of corruption and oppression. The reconstruction period was over, and like a "Surgeon gone mad" it left scars on the soul and spirit of the people. The American Fantasy dream had become a nightmare with real live monsters.
