ABSTRACT

There are approximately 50 major resident theatres in the US that pay a full-time living wage and benefits. Those theatres have an average of four people on their top artistic staff: an artistic director, an associate artistic director, a literary manager and a literary associate. Many theatres, especially those working outside the mainstream and with diverse artists, get so little support and work so hard that they are endlessly exhausted and cannot even take the time to develop best practices, let alone share or teach them. The disability movement, and the intersectionality with other voting block groups, is becoming strong and theatre and art is one of the arenas where they have long been denied entry. Theatre companies that are producing toward sustainability and using the new cutting edge disability assistance technologies are often located in the regional hubs. Sustainability is both about money and about structure, planning and long-term thinking.
