ABSTRACT

A fight director should be inspired and excited to work with different disabilities as this only opens up a highly creative workspace for everyone. It is also crucial to be aware of medications, food or drink needs and keeping hydrated during fight rehearsals. For artists with disabilities who often do not get to work, let alone move around onstage, rehearsals should be a physically freeing time. Most artists with disabilities are keenly aware of where their bodies are in space and in relationship to others. In working with artists with disabilities blocking a show is the most immediate and obvious way to break the mold of what the societal and audience normative is. Simply stated, the only issue with blocking a blind actor is that she or he cannot see. He or she can hear and walk and talk and count paces for blocking and enter arm in arm if coming down stairs or avoiding set pieces.
