ABSTRACT

Worktime and its arrangement has become a matter for concern. Starting with the four-day week and other versions of the compressed week and moving one at a time through a group of lesser-known time changes, here are some of the major new time options. From all available indications, the compressed workweek is here to stay, although it is as yet unclear as to how fast it will continue to move and whether or not it will ever become, as some have predicted, the dominant work schedule for the majority of Americans. At the heart of today's Catalyst program is the need for new forms of work to support the permanent part-timer. Time, Inc., grants a sabbatical as a reward for its executives and writers, giving them each a year off with pay when they attain fifteen years with the company. The company has been granting time off for civic action on an informal basis since the 1950s.
