ABSTRACT
Walker Gibson developed one of the early graduate programs in rhetoric at the University of Massachusetts—Amherst, where as director of Freshman English, he was also an early advocate for student-centered pedagogies. He contributed to the change in focus from formalistic, grammatical approaches in composition to consideration of style and voice, both the authentic voice of the student writer and the constructed voices that define writing personae.
