ABSTRACT

A key starting point in tackling the attitudes to risk is to ensure that everyone knows how to identify and express risk in a foolproof way. Many project teams seem to have a major difficulty in expressing risk, that is, articulating the risk so that others can fully comprehend it. There is also widespread ignorance of the differences between a risk and an issue, such that many risks are often really issues and vice versa. The best way to identify risk is via a group session. Running a Risk Identification Workshop is an excellent way of gaining team input, expertise and, importantly, buy-in to the risk management process. It is important to set the boundaries before starting the workshop. It is usually helpful to circulate project material in advance of the workshop. Project start-up is one of the most fraught periods of a project's lifespan.
