ABSTRACT

Assessment is very much a perception, and being a perception it is subject to a large margin of error. This is why it is always helpful to record comments concerning the assessment of any risk. The perception at the time the risk was assessed may differ from later assessments. Risk assessment comprises various sub-phases assignment of risk owners, estimating probability and impact, assessing uncertainty and assigning priorities. In large projects it may be desirable to hold a group session to determine the assessment of risks identified in a previous session. More accurate assessments can usually be obtained through such a session, since participants are dedicating themselves to a single aim. A Risk Assessment Workshop is valuable for risks requiring input from several parties, where assessment can be debated and argued. Risk owners will have a key role to play in the workshop, since they will have gathered base material for discussion concerning the risks they own.
