ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book looks at the philosophy, the theory and the working practices of profession which is still in a highly volatile developmental phase. It considers the role of supervision in locating how and where 'the personal intrudes into the professional' – and how this relates to a supervisee's growth and needs. The book offers a practical approach to the 'why and how' of co-creative supervision and the person of the supervisor, and sets the scene. It explores ways of seeing and ways of being with others and the key framework is Transactional Analysis (TA), which describes along with examples and illustrations from practice. The book covers the legal aspects of supervision, the 'mores', cultural differences in our ethical assumptions, and links these to insights from egostate and script theory. It discusses coaching skills in business, schools and hospitals, therapy centres, and so on.
