ABSTRACT

Learning is how we can change; learn from one another in dialogue, in relationship. This chapter explores the links between supervision and: how we make meaning; learning as a relational, co-creative means for change; and stories, life-script and the learning cycle. Supervision is a place where authentic learning happens. Adult learning is most effective when it is based on experience (experiential learning) and is co-creative (in a two-person or multi-person setting). The effect of the relational field, where we meet one another through our external actions and our internal thinking patterns, is transferred into our personal meaning-making and enables us to see things afresh. This is what we can call 'relational learning'. Subjectivity and inter-subjectivity – real learning happens through a 'disorienting dilemma' that leads to a change in self-perception; a challenge to some aspect of one's identity causes a change in the frame of reference.
