ABSTRACT

A psychiatric view can be gleaned from various sources, including published guidance on the diagnosis of psychoses and related criteria. Psychosis appears in a range of disorders where it may be integral or associated. Terminology linked with psychiatry and psychosis includes medical and scientific language; psychiatric terms in general; psychiatric expressions associated with psychosis; the use of Greek and Latin terminology; and the language of categorisation and classification. Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5 (DSM-5) provides diagnostic criteria for several psychotic disorders grouped as 'schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders' in which psychosis is integral. Generally, DSM-5 uses the expression 'disorder' to refer to various conditions. For instance, there is reference to 'delusional disorder', 'brief psychotic disorder', 'schizophreniform disorder', 'schizoaffective disorder', 'substance/medication-induced psychotic disorder', 'psychotic disorder due to another medical condition' and 'schizotypal personality disorder'. Psychotic features can be found in 'major depressive disorder' and 'persistent depressive disorder'.
