ABSTRACT

This chapter takes an in-depth and inclusive look at the conceptual and theoretical framework of trauma (whether it is a large T trauma, small t trauma, or complex trauma), Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and the comorbidity of trauma and other mental health diagnoses. It goes on to discuss the staggering statistics that make it evident how pervasive psychological trauma is in our society, the host of factors that contribute to trauma, and what organizations, such as the World Health Organization, have to say on the subject. This chapter also offers the statistics on the many types of trauma experienced by diverse populations in the United States.
