ABSTRACT

It has been recognized that because the problems of comparing professional and managerial jobs are so complex the simpler systems of job evaluation are not really satisfactory, and a fully analytical system is required. The success or failure of such a system will be determined by the choice of factors which, for this range of posts, must reflect both the difficulty of the work and the responsibility exercised. This process, however, carried to extremes, can invalidate the whole system, because it tends to emphasize the differences between jobs rather than the similarities in the qualities which have to be exercised in carrying them out. The discarding of such a basis removes an impossible encumbrance and makes it possible to evaluate systematically and fairly all the things which are really important to any Management. Furthermore, it avoids one of the serious weaknesses of points systems in giving the impression of a scientific precision which is not attainable.
