ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the group work programs that were conducted at Cedar Cottage. Most treatment programs for those who sexually offend are offered through groups. Group therapy for harming fathers is an integral part of the Cedar Cottage model, with a requirement for attendance at a fortnightly group meeting in addition to weekly/fortnightly individual therapy and other conjoint sessions as indicated. Individual therapy is usually a powerful tool for those who have experienced sexual assault, however it has an unavoidable problematic aspect. Diverse models of group work have been applied to groups for children after sexual assault. Compared to mothers' groups, planning for children's groups requires a number of additional considerations. Group work is not an adequate stand-alone intervention for any family member affected by parental sexual assault. Concomitantly, for mothers and victimized children, groups provide unique empowering opportunities to speak freely with others who have had similar experiences and to be understood in a setting without stigma or shame.
