ABSTRACT

Supervisors and managers are key people in the adaptation process. This chapter describes a flow chart showing the model and the sequence of steps leading to adaptation. It briefly considers governmental involvement in the adaptation process. The chapter provides suggestions and recommendations based on theory and on survey. Companies wishing to develop their non-native employees into top-notch performers must be prepared to assist with their transition into the mainstream of society. One of the most effective steps that can be taken is to establish a mentoring or "buddy system". Governments at all levels can provide a supportive social environment that helps both non-native employees and the companies they work for to be successful. There are many small companies and organizations in the industries represented in the survey that are not large enough to be able to provide the language and job skill training that would improve the chances of newcomers to get and keep jobs—and, therefore, eventually become taxpayers.
