ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a model for stages of adaptation to the work environment and provides descriptions of each phase. An Intercultural Value Inventory can be used to determine something about the value system of any individual. The chapter considers the adaptation process that is used with a new employee, but the supervisors and managers roles are equally important. These individuals direct the work, as well as the employees of the organization. The employer initially provides policies and procedures that allow the organization to fill vacant positions with persons who have the appropriate skills and abilities. In addition to policies and general procedures, an "action position description" (APD) is needed for each position. The APD identifies the major parts of the position, the specific behaviours expected in each part of the job and the standards describing satisfactory performance. Managers and supervisors must work "smarter" than ever before if they are to keep up with domestic and overseas competition.
