ABSTRACT

Consciousness conceptualised as an inalienable feature of human species-being was a feature of every major work by Marx. According to Marx, in capitalism, the prevailing dominant culture facilitates a negation of consciousness about the relationship between the two social classes: the labouring class who produce value through their labour power, and the ruling class who own the means of production and profit from the work of the labouring class. Class consciousness is necessary among the working class for the possibility of alternative revolutionary Left social transformation to emerge. The chapter focuses on the importance of social class consciousness and classed practices for contributing to developing Marxist theory and strategy for change. In relation to the Gramscian idea of class struggle in cultural forms, focus on the lived world in Sweden in this conjuncture of social democratic crisis is significant as a contribution to Marxist theory building for social transformation at this important moment in Swedish history.
