ABSTRACT

Students are generally taught that the education of slow learners is a specialized field but it is often forgotten that a large number of children have problems in learning. Pringle has estimated that probably around 20 per cent of children at some time during their school career need specialized help in some field of education. In some developing countries factors such as undernourishment, poverty and the lack of education in rural areas play a major role in producing many deprived children with learning difficulties. The aims of special education include preparing a child for a vocation, leisure activities and life within the home, although this alone is insufficient. Children who live in deprived areas may be able to attend preschool nursery groups, although a large number of handicapped have no opportunity to do this and remain all day within the home.
