ABSTRACT

Students who are in secondary school can help in home-sitting services and in social education programs. It is of interest to learn that a recent group of students who were allocated by their school to different agencies within a city came to regard social education with the developmentally handicapped as the most interesting. Parents, teacher-aides and volunteers are all a necessary part of the service. Many parents wish their children to attend normal schools despite their handicap. However, an emotional over-reaction is not a substitute for careful observation and application of rigorous ideas and unbiased evaluation. However, many of the skills which are required for teaching the handicapped child and adult can be carried out by people with little training, provided they are under skilled supervision. Many women, who have brought up their own children, are an ideal resource because of their vast knowledge of practical child rearing.
