ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the actual procedures used to convert the proposed program into reality. Coincident with the beginning of the project, school personnel changed from an eclectic, traditional approach to an Individually Guided Education (IGE) program format. The graduate student and faculty consultants met weekly during the spring and summer prior to the initiation of the program to plan the intervention strategies in detail. Language arts teachers of the experimental and control children were asked to fill out a behavior-rating scale before and after the program. A good deal of time was spent near the end of the program discussing strategies for the maintenance of the behavior changes. Instead of formally introducing the companions to the children, thereby risking stigma from the child's peers, the companions unobtrusively began the program by talking to the child on the playground as well as to other children in the vicinity.
