ABSTRACT

Virtually any computer science faculty member knows by direct experience that grading in our discipline is difficult and time consuming. Different subject areas differ in terms of test format, time a student has to take the test, percentage that the free-response counts towards the final advanced placement grade, reader training, and grading strategies. Calculus and Computer Science compare the most favorably on these variables and, in particular, are quite similar in terms of reader training and grading strategies. Summative assessment focuses upon mastery and grading. Typically this type of assessment occurs only a few times in a semester, but the scope of each evaluation may be substantial. Traditionally, one instructor handles grading tests for a relatively small class, while a team may organize a "grading party" to address materials submitted within a large class.
