ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a curricular map as a helpful tool for comparing a curriculum with programmatic goals and objectives and with national curricular recommendations. Although some may consider the development of a curricular map as a formal exercise to satisfy an external agency, the author's own experience suggests this exercise can have several helpful benefits. A curricular map can help identify gaps or redundancy within a curriculum. In each case, the task required substantial time, suggesting that this work may require considerable motivation, dedication, and careful analysis. Any curriculum reflects priorities and choices, and the curricular map clarifies the perspectives of the Liberal Arts Computer Science Consortium. The naive algorithm might produce a reasonable result, but the work for the nested loops followed by the review of priorities and perspectives likely requires more time than seems realistic.
