ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author talks about Pace's response to Tina Heafner's commentary. Heafner has contributed so much to the field through groundbreaking research, advocacy, and work with teachers. The author appreciated Heafner's concern with connecting social studies with literacy and inquiry to gain traction in schools and deepen student learning. Heafner argues that developing disciplinary literacy as highlighted in the Common Core State Standards and C3 Framework generates the need to teach content. The author was grateful that Heafner's essay addressed disparities in access to social studies. In prior research, he found less instructional time and/or lower quality social studies teaching in lower income schools serving a majority of students of color than in higher income schools serving a majority of White students. Heafner points out that even within schools, some students are pulled out of social studies for remedial and language support.
