ABSTRACT

Critical democratic teacher education provides a framework for providing political stances in teacher education that challenge all forms of oppression. An analysis of the way power functions provides a tool for policy engagement and political activism. This chapter focuses on a framework for teacher education programs that draw upon the understanding of critical democratic education and social movement theory. One of the key components of this framework is positionality. The second component of a framework for critical democratic teacher education involves a focus upon the relation of positionality with democracy and inclusion. The third component of the framework involves discourse analysis. By examining the discourses that prohibit inclusion, teacher education programs can better focus upon how to engage with policy and political action. The fourth component of the framework involves action. In consideration of positionalities, democratic dialogue, and discourse analysis, teacher education can strengthen discourses that increase social justice in policy and political engagement.
