ABSTRACT

Old buildings can be boring to young children but not if a tip is taken from some of the TV history programmes and become history detectives. Museums and old houses and castles are wonderful these days with worksheets for children to fill in which encourage them to use their powers of observation to find certain things along the route. Science is an enormous and endlessly fascinating subject which amounts to a systematic study of the physical and natural world. There are wonderful science-related visitor centres big and small across the UK, and the rest of the world, which can form part of a scientific day out and whet the appetite of the young. Rivers, valleys, undulations, hills, lakes, estuaries, towns, villages could all be on an almost infinite to-visit list. Geography is great for linking other subjects. Some children will always prefer the adventure playground.
