ABSTRACT

Opinion has always been a key component of journalism. Climate change has a way of mobilizing opinions as few other issues can, although it remains unclear whether the Guardian campaign is a blueprint for the future of opinion journalism. In columns and editorials opinion is expected. Writers take varying approaches but the idea is to make the writing lively and the subject interesting. The concept of an editorial campaign such as the one on climate change that The Guardian launched is nearly as old as the idea of establishing an editorial page and separating out opinion from news. There were also opinion columns, news stories, podcasts and digital reports aimed at the concept of climate fatalism – the idea that nothing could be done to prevent how humans were raising the temperature of the planet.
