ABSTRACT

Understanding the nuances of the craft of interviewing can be particularly important in talking to scientists. It is valuable to work on the skills to conduct an interview. It is important to not rush into an interview, even if it has to occur by telephone and the journalist is on deadline. Sometimes news sources want to know more about the reporter's background or the types of questions that will be asked in the interview. Once the interview is completed, they review notes immediately. Often gaps are clearly obvious and need to be filled in and abbreviations and symbols need to be clarified while the interview is still fresh in the writer's mind. Establishing rapport can help get an interview started. Sometimes establishing a connection is less important, depending upon the type of interview and how news-savvy the source is.
