ABSTRACT

In this section, we look to class as a social construct that emerges due to the logics inherent to capitalist economic order. This begins with general critiques of capitalism, from the classic text of Karl Marx to contemporary scholar David Harvey.

Overall, criticism rests squarely on the false pretense that capitalism is a fair competition with winners and losers. On the contrary, the logics of capital require a class hierarchy in order to maintain it, and the government helps with this role, in part by providing a public education that stratifies the population. As you read, think about what role education, and mathematics education, might play in maintaining these social relations reflected in the economic order.
