ABSTRACT

This book provides an introduction to teaching mathematics with a critical perspective. A natural starting place is to looking critically at the discipline of mathematics, and you might be thinking, how can we look critically at mathematics? Do we not consider mathematics to be the objective, value-free knowledge that is free from argumentation and contention? Is it not true that 1 + 1 = 2 and there is no evidence to the contrary? It turns out that there is much dispute as to the nature of mathematics and what counts as math. Mathematics means one thing to one person and a completely different thing to another.
