ABSTRACT

There is a phrase in radio broadcasting. It's "sound for the sake of sound". It means don't add sound to a story just so there is some sound in it. AP or the Associated Press is a major source of video and audio for radio and television news outlets. It is a service that is in addition to the wire copy and stations have to subscribe in order to gain access to it. With that subscription, they are free to use those resources in any way they wish without having to give credit to AP. This audio and video is most often acquired by going to the scene of the story and shooting or recording it. It can then be used by a reporter in a live shot, added to a piece that is going to be recorded for later use or sent back into the station electronically so that it can be used in creating a story in-house.
