ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the way that the news is written. There are a great many ways that people can get their news these days. Broadcasters are competing with information being delivered right into people's hands via smartphones and tablets or straight to their desks on their computers. A good newscast starts with good writing. The news will only sound as good as the script. But there are also a number of other things that have to be considered when writing the news. When someone writes a story for the newspaper or for a magazine, they will write to fit a certain amount of space in the publication. With radio or TV, authors write for time. But while the space in a newspaper or magazine doesn't change once the story is finished, the time during a newscast might. When authors use the word 'style' in connection with newswriting, they are referring to how the story is constructed, not the content.
