ABSTRACT
Of recent years the hours of labour have tended to be much reduced both by Trade Union effort, by Government regulation, and by the voluntary action of employers. Whereas the normal working day is now eight hours, and in some employments seven, a hundred years ago it was eleven (in both cases exclusive of meal times). It is probable, however, that on the whole modern work is more strenuous.
