ABSTRACT
Chapter 3 includes a discussion of approaches for analyzing the generative structures, patterns and processes in Karanfilköy and Fatih Sultan Mehmet. This includes brief explanations of the epistemological framework underpinning the book, the methods used, units of analysis studied, defining constructs, data collection, sampling and addressing validity and reliability concerns. The constructs of living structure (degrees of life), pattern language and generative development processes are described. This chapter concisely summarizes the methods and explains why these aforementioned issues are important for supporting the study and establishing the connection between generative design processes and the informal settlements.
