ABSTRACT

Matthew Goldstein's managerial mind-set and leadership style complemented the university-wide initiative to universalize the goals of the colleges through a Performance Management Process (PMP) that awarded things such as increasing enrollment numbers and graduation rates. Goldstein expanded his plans for centralization to include the undergraduate curriculum with an emphasis on reforming the core curriculum. The battle for the curriculum was waged by the central administration and faculty governing bodies, namely the University Faculty Senate and the Professional Staff Congress. The faculty called upon national organizations such as the Modern Language Association and the American Association of University Professors to support their cause. In 2008, the New York State Commission on Higher Education Report recommended that both the City University and the State University of New York restructure their transfer pathways to remove barriers in movement from community to senior colleges.
