ABSTRACT

So far we have been concentrating on what we might call traditional thin-film materials. Their properties may have been slightly modified by their microstructure, but, largely, they could be described by a single set of optical constants not far removed from those we would expect of the material in a pure state. In this chapter, we take a brief look beyond that model into composite materials, birefringent materials, and metamaterials.
