ABSTRACT

As Marc Andreessen wrote in his Wall Street Journal op-ed [6], software is eating the world. For industry after industry, investment in software R&D is increasing and the software in products, rather than the mechanics and hardware, defines the value. Thus, software plays an increasingly central role in the modern world. In virtually any industry there are examples of software enabling new business models, novel applications and unprecedented efficiency improvements. Of course, well-known companies such as Google, Facebook and Spotify are entirely driven by software. But even for a Volvo truck, more than 70% of all innovation is now driven by software.
