ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the formation process of Enchin Keizu and compares the consciousness of the bloodline of the Inagi-no-Obito clan and Enchin as an individual. Inagi-no-Obito, which was the native clan of Enchin, changed its name to the Wake-no-Kimi clan in 866. When a clan applied to change its name, the government or Kokushi confirmed the genealogy or Honkeichō of the clan. The chapter outlines the situation of the Inagi-no-Obito clan at the beginning of the Jōgan era. In 836, the Sanuki-no-Kimi clan changed its clan name to the Sanuki-no-Ason clan. Both the Inagi-no-Obito clan and the Wake-no-Kimi clan were the descendants of Emperor Keikō. The Inagi-no-Obito clan must have been stimulated by the changing of the name of the Sanuki-no-Ason clan. The chapter also analyses the editing process in light of the movement to change the Inagi-no-Obito clan name.
