ABSTRACT

Recent scholarship claims that citizen deliberation can contribute to the quality of democracy and political decision-making. This chapter analyses the extension of G1000 lives up to its democratic credentials, and the trade-offs between the different democratic quality standards. The trade-off between different democratic values, which characterizes any type of democracy, thus also threatens deliberative democracy. The deliberative events are always social events, where citizens who formerly gathered in the group dynamic aspect of these events is crucial for its success. In addition to the democratic politics also depends on transparent and procedurally fair decision-making. In addition to the open agenda-setting, the organizers ensured the openness of the process even during the G1000. Neutrality and independence the media and political spin surrounding the G1000 could have influenced the participants. This independence increased the inclusiveness and openness, but it also undermined the responsiveness.
