ABSTRACT

This chapter provides information on the application of Process-Based Instruction (PBI) at an advanced level, and one are strongly encouraged to ensure that students are competent in the establishment phase skills. The ultimate goal of PBI is to develop students' knowledge of the planning process which will enable them to judge which type or form of plan is needed for a task or problem. The chapter focuses on how PBI can be made an integral part of classroom practice through the application of the teaching–learning strategies, the use of PBI plans, and by blending and abbreviating plans to make them more generalizable and how students can achieve independence in learning and problem-solving through their general understanding of the planning process. It presents a number of ways in which teachers can maintain PBI in classrooms and other learning environments through the phases of consolidation and incorporation.
