ABSTRACT

The past several years have seen explosive growth in digital devices. From smartphones and fitness watches to artificial intelligence-based programs, these products have made their way into many facets of everyday life. And once considered just a sci-fi fantasy, doctors and scientists have even developed a working Star Trek-like tricorder device, capable of diagnosing a variety of health problems with a smartphone. All of these devices and software are generating vast amounts of data, causing researchers and health systems to grapple with data storage and interoperability challenges. Furthermore, the utility of these data on health outcomes is still unclear. This chapter describes both the challenges and the opportunities that digital health present.
