ABSTRACT

In 1995 a trial excavation was conducted in the courtyard of the Ottoman Serai. Part of a floor composed of marble tiles in different colours, three fallen marble columns and two marble capitals were uncovered. One of the capitals, covered by a coloured fresco, was in the Corinthian style; the second, also with a coloured fresco, bears a Maltese cross painted in red on a black background. In addition, many stained-glass window fragments in various colours were found strewn on the floor. These elements apparently comprise parts of the nave of the church of St John.
