ABSTRACT

Structurally, this paper addresses five ways of adornment: make up, tattooing, piercing, jewels, hairstyles and nails. The different ethnic groups of which Suriname is constructed all came with their peculiarities in body ornamentation. In modernity, these specific habits are now applied by all groups. This is not limited to Suriname, but is a practice that occurs in the diaspora worldwide. This paper researches the elements various peoples brought to Suriname with respect to body decoration. What were the varieties of ways they applied and how these elements were distributed over time amongst the different ethnic groups and how nowadays individuals of all these groups use them intertwined. We will conclude that there are no longer identity markers of a separate ethnic group.
