ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines a series of exercises to help to use Stanislavski's ideas and practices when devising. For post-16 students in the UK who choose Stanislavski as their practitioner to use when devising, the exercises will guide along that process. Stanislavski's directorial repertoire at the Moscow Art Theatre was varied, incorporating a number of experimental styles. Stanislavski when working on Hamlet at the Moscow Art Theatre invited Edward Gordon Craig to design for the production, who created a stylised setting with moveable screens reflecting the changing nature of Hamlet's mind. This collaboration between Stanislavski and Craig shows us how the system could be used for any style of theatre and not just relevant to naturalistic productions. Student group exercise is based on Peter Brook's idea of actors creating an invisible network of relationships that exists connecting and drawing together the actors into an ensemble.
