ABSTRACT

The objective and action run in tandem, for, when people want something, they immediately start to imagine what they will do to achieve it. The action comes as an active verb, such as I belong, I enjoy, I reject, I take pride, I challenge. This chapter explores how to use actions through a variety of exercises. All the exercises are student exercises, with the last exercise being a teacher-led extension exercise. Using actions helps people as actors to delve into the subtext of a play or a piece of devised theatre they are working on; they can use actions to dig deep, decide on a direction when acting and be active in their role. One of the exercises presented in the chapter helps the student to start to see how the psychological and physical work hand in hand, and it allows the class to start building reference points for having an action on stage.
