ABSTRACT

When there is an event, such as someone pulling a knife, anyone watching will experience what Stanislavski called a moment of orientation. It always takes us a moment to register what has happened, what we feel about it and what we are going to do. This chapter introduces some exercises that will help one to act an event in the play believably and within the circumstances. These exercises are about giving you the tools to walk through an event, so that it is believed by the audience as logical within the circumstances of the play. For each bit of a play there is a main event, this is the main thing that has happened in this bit. Stanislavski and his actors would decide on the main event (the main thing that had happened) for a bit of the text, when working on a play.
