The second misinterpretation gives the credit to the two chemists who invented the non-toxic formula. On the contrary, this study shows that inventors do not work in a historical vacuum. Serious experimentation was not even encouraged until after the French match workers had exerted so much pressure that a ban, with or without a non-toxic substitute, had to be imposed.
