ABSTRACT

I T IS a relief to turn from this story of con-fusion to another which from beginning to end was harmonious. This story ·came from Massachusetts, too, from the Boston Manufacturing Company, makers of Gilbrae ginghams and other cottons in Waltham. I knew the treasurer of these mills slightly. It occurred to me that I could build up an account there, and one day I asked him, "\:Vhy are all ginghams always the same tiresome little red and white or blue and white checks? Isn't it possible to make something more beautiful and original r "

"Rather!;, he replied. "It certainly is mechanically possible; and we have a designer whose busi11ess it is to plan new patterns. But so far we've found them hard to sell. Buyers in the big stores say that women want the same little old checks year after year."
