ABSTRACT

I was entirely unprepared for earning a living. My family were working people and poor. My mother is German, my father Polish. We had that clean, hard, cold poverty that has been associated in the sentimental novel with German immigrants. Our home life was kindly, unemotional and self-abnegating. Enormous sacrifices were made that I might remain at school as long as possible. My own pride and vanity and the necessity of my family made a business success compulsory for me.
