ABSTRACT

Nature generally defines all living and non-living elements of our surroundings including flora and fauna. Man from the beginning has maintained an inseparable relationship with nature and has remained dependent on nature for survival on earth. Nature virtually dominated human life till the discovery of fire and iron. The invention of these two elements set mankind on motion. They started exploring natural resources in different new ways for the fulfilment of their needs. And in this process many societies consciously or unconsciously evolved various methods to use nature prudently. While at the same time, human tendency to have a control over nature encouraged proclamation of right over natural resources like land, forest, etc. Thus a new era of conflict and conciliation between man and environment began. In this new milieu not only society but state too emerged as an actor in influencing nature. However, environment continued to shape the course of human civilization through different means. But with industrial revolution a new form of development took place. To ensure maximum benefit, vested groups started complete destruction of nature. As a result, the centuries old fragile relationship between man and nature entered into a new phase.1 The relationship between man and nature with regard to Kachar is no different.
