Such a situation could never have developed, let alone persisted, without the acquiescence of many women. Nevertheless, legislation designed to 'eliminate discrimination between men and women in regard to pay and other terms and conditions of employment was not passed until 1970. This situation is related to a curious and comparatively recent view of what marriage is about. 'From being a financial bargain, an investment in social stability and a pact to perpetuate the line, it has largely become two people's
attempt to perpetuate their love. '2 Until the beginning of the last century this idea would have seemed absurd.
